Black and white clothes, make-up and high heels and shoes. All of these things marked the beginning of the Korean International School Model United Nations on a sunny, bright morning of October 30th of 2015. The KISMUN held this year was the second time that has been held since 2014 and this year, the students all had to attend classes as the condition for attending the KISMUN event for the preparation of it apart from last year. The first day of KISMUN started with an Opening Ceremony in the AV room with the speech of the school principal, Mr. Kim. The Secretary General and the Vice Secretary General respectively introduced themselves and Mr. Marc who led the students for about 8 months up to this day gave a speech about 2015 KISMUN's ultimate goal. After the Opening Ceremony, the students all scattered to their committees and began the conference with the opening speeches that they've prepared and struggled to memorize. With the lead of the President and the Deputy President of each committees, the delegates of each country quickened their pace's to make a great team by lobbying.
On October 30th many voluntary clubs including the members of the 'The Link' had a chance to go on a business tour. We went to a textile company called 'Hansol Vina' . Hansol Vina is a big company that had 64,000 workers in the past but after the labor costs have increased, the number of the workers has currently dwindled to 53,000.
This company usually makes cloths for makers such as 'Pink', 'VSX' and much more. Especially, the guide told the students that the clothes they make are mostly for 'Pink' which export clothes not only to Korea but also to Europe and the USA. According to the employee, Hansol is known to be the NO.1 of all textile company around the world because their sales are about 1 trillion Korean won and they are looking forward to constant sales increases from 1 trillion to 1 trillion and 5000billion Korean won in just three years. The company is predicting that this will be possible because they are providing the best service that they could give such as checking their clothes several times to see if there is a hazard in it and export their clothes after the check. Other than that, Hansol Vina has a very distinctive system that they use to raise the efficiency of the laborers. Inside the factory buildings of Hansol Vina, you can find some stickers that are attached to the wall next the workers which tells about the workers' production and capacity. If the worker did a good job they would get a sticker with a smiling face and when their production is low, hey would get a crying face. The guide explained that this system is encouraging the employees to work earnestly and also showed great pride said that this helped Hansol Vina to stand as a international company. On September 14th to 16th, the Vietnamese speech contest was held in the KIS. In KIS, students get to learn Vietnamese in different levels depending on how good they are and this year, students who took part in the event were divided into 3 levels. Students from low levels started their speech first. About 15~20 students took part of this event in each grade. Some of them attended alone and some of them took part of this event in pairs of up to 3 people. 5 to 7 Vietnamese teachers were the judges for this event. Because most students find vietnamese as difficult language, not many students took part of this event. Almost every student who took part of this event got an award. In most grades, students from the highest levels took 1st place and other students also got awards from the contest. After this event was finished the students had some spare time so some of the students came out and showed others their talents. About 4 students showed their talents, 2 of them sand a song and other 2 students danced. Although some students didn't really pay attention to this event, many of them enjoyed it and also watching students giving speech in Vietnamese was very enjoyable. Written by 9-1 Chung Hae Jin
May 26th, 2015, a breath-taking competition was presented by the students of KIS. This day, the Economy Contest was held in the school by KOCHAM, an association that is a group of the Korean companies in HCMC. The competition was done by students from 1st grade to 12th grade and it and students took the test on the 6th and 7th period of the 26th. All of the students received a textbook about economy and each student did their best to study for good results. Especially, some of the test problems this year were exceptionally problems that students had to write their opinions. After the contest, to the question about how the test problems were, students answered, “It was quite difficult because we really didn’t have much experience with those kinds of questions.” The contest of this year awarded 1 student for 1st place, 3 students for 2nd place, and 8 students for 3rd place, awarding 156 students in total of about 1500 students. Students that received awards also got scholarship for their future growth, which was up to 15 million VD. Many students did their best to become 1st place but there were also students that couldn’t receive an award. Still, they say that it wasn’t so bad since they got to learn many new things. 10-3 Kim Yeun Soo, Choi Hyun Jung
On May 6th 2015, Grade 9's English Contest was held at the AV room. There were total 10 teams and there were only 4 individual participants among them all. There were various topics such as psychopath, dragons, abortion, mystery, and five most mysterious places in the world. Some of the participants were nervous and made some mistakes, but many of them did a wonderful speech. The English Contest result was announced in front of the international department of education on May 22th. The first place went to Park Jin Seo from class 2, Second place was Kim Tae Hyeon, Seon Eun A, and the third place went to other 5 teams. Total 8 teams have received the awards but unfortunately other two teams have not received any awards. Grade 10's English speaking contest took place on May 12 with skilled participants. All participants had tried their best to show what they could do and how well they could speak English. All Power Point presentations were made with effort and all participants considered the design of the presentation very carefully. The audiences were the rest of the students, who did not participate in the contest, and 4 EFL teachers were ones to grade the scores. Although all groups tried their best and had shown their effort, only one group could win the 1st place. Of course, it would have been hard for teachers to decide the winning team but they had no choice. Hwi Jae's group was chosen for the 1st place. The English speaking contest ended successfully and we hope to see this great contest again next year. Written by Kim Han Sung (10-3), Oh Se Hoon (10-1), Lee Woo Joo (10-1)
Jenny (9-1), Yang Hae Jung (9-3), Noh Jee Yoon (9-3) Vietnam’s weather is hot and sweaty all year. This program, ‘Good Morning Music helps students who are exhausted from studying ‘heal’ by listening to music when entering the school. KIS’s music teacher Ms. Lee Yeong Mi is running the program with some students who have passion for music. Including Ms. Lee’s last school, this kind of music program already exists in some schools in Korea. ‘Good morning music’ is usually played and performed once in a month, and it provides several benefits and advantages. This program gives good effects to not only the students that listen to the music but also to the students who play the music. Also, despite the fact that it is a quite small stage, all the students of the music program said that they really enjoyed and were satisfied playing music for other people at school. Additionally, there weren’t many difficulties during the process and everyone just had fun rehearsing and performing. ‘Good morning music’ has started practicing since March and started performing from April but most students didn’t know about this and there weren’t many people until then. However, the performance was absolutely successful on May when they played some music related to the ‘Teacher’s day’ and the day of Dokdo. They helped students think once more about the love of their teachers and their country. Written by Kim Yeun Soo (10-3), Choi Hyun Jung (10-3)
